Using ALEX to Turn Employees into HSA True-Believers

Anonymous CPG Company, a consumer packaged goods employer with 8,000 U.S.-based employees, was struggling to help workers understand and use its HSA-based health plans. Many employees were choosing a more expensive, lower-deductible option or not using their HSA accounts effectively, and the company needed stronger benefits education after eliminating an HRA option for plan year 2014.

ALEX provided an interactive benefits education tool that helped employees compare plan costs and understand how HSA funds work. With ALEX, enrollment in the higher-deductible HSA rose from 23% in 2012 to 71% in year 1 and 80% in year 2, while employee understanding improved significantly; the company reported that people finally understood the plans and were shifting away from the more expensive option.
