PayPal, a leading global digital payments platform, faced the challenge of scaling its real-time fraud prevention infrastructure to handle massive global transaction volume. Their previous in-memory database was creating escalating costs and they needed a solution that could guarantee fast, predictable performance while leveraging both memory and disk to be more economically efficient. They turned to vendor Aerospike for its database technology.

Aerospike provided its Hybrid Memory Architecture to serve as PayPal's operational data store. The solution enabled over 8 million database executions per second and supported the retrieval of features for predictive AI models within tight latency windows. As a result, PayPal achieved a significant infrastructure efficiency, saving over $9 million annually in hardware costs while maintaining the sub-50 millisecond performance required for 75% of its real-time risk decisions.
