State Bank of India Manages Nation’s Largest ATM Network

State Bank of India, with more than 75 million customers, 9,000 branches and a rapidly expanding ATM footprint, needed a proven, highly reliable switching platform to roll out and scale a 24-hour ATM service across India. The bank faced integration challenges with 4,000 branch hosts, card issuance and reconciliation processes, and patchy rural communications. To meet these needs it chose ACI Worldwide’s BASE24 solution deployed on HP NonStop servers.

ACI Worldwide implemented BASE24 (with local interchange support from FSS and disaster‑recovery replication via GoldenGate), building a mixed VSAT/landline/ISDN network of some 8,000 TCP/IP connections to support 4,000 ATMs and future expansion. The deployment delivered the required reliability and scalability—SBI now issues 6 million debit cards, processes about 15 million ATM transactions per month, and has launched value‑added services like exam-fee payments and mobile top-ups—helping SBI grow its ATM network while reducing branch dependence.
