General Motors Leverages Employee Recognition to Engage A Global Workforce

General Motors, a global automaker with more than 160,000 employees, was undergoing a major business and cultural transformation to deliver a vision of “zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.” To drive that vision GM needed a single, inclusive way to align employees around seven core behaviors and improve a widely criticized recognition program—seeking one global platform to boost engagement, simplify governance, and give employees more visibility, personalization, and consistency.

GM launched the Achievers recognition and rewards platform in 2017 to 67,000 employees across 26 countries, combining social and points-based recognition, one-click “Boost” awards, real-time newsfeeds, milestone celebrations and integrations (including Outlook). The program set an activation record, reached 87% employee activity within 30 days and 97% activation after a year, with about 6 in 10 employees using the platform monthly and 8 in 10 managers recognizing team members each month; recognition became one of the top five improved areas in engagement surveys, with thousands of positive comments.
