United Utilities, the UK’s largest publicly listed water company, needed to bring together fragmented and incomplete asset records spread across multiple GIS systems and versions of the truth. Working with 1Spatial and its 1SMS tool suite, the utility set out to clean, consolidate, and improve data covering millions of water and wastewater assets, while also preparing for more accurate mapping of newly transferred private sewers.

1Spatial ran workshops, migrated data into a central database, and used inference rules to fill gaps and map missing assets based on available location and property data. The result was 16 million assets mapped, a 24 per cent improvement in tracking transferred assets, and a fully mapped private sewer stock that added 6,000 km more than initially estimated. These improvements gave United Utilities better operational insight, more proactive customer service, and stronger support for predictive maintenance and regulatory commitments.
