Custom Concrete, an Indiana-based foundation installation company, set out to become a “destination employer” but struggled with a highly distributed workforce, frequent job-site moves, and turnover common in construction. Annual, ad‑hoc surveys proved “hit or miss,” leaving leadership without the timely, honest insight needed to understand and improve employee engagement.
The company implemented an ongoing employee‑engagement platform and quarterly measurement of 17 engagement drivers, paired with stay interviews, a dedicated engagement strategist, manager coaching, and revamped hiring, onboarding and offboarding practices—plus wellness, a mobile communication app and recognition programs. The results: overall turnover dropped 24.7% in one year, terminations fell in 10 of 12 months, retention improved broadly, and new‑hire turnover sits well below the industry average.
