A Zyxel Case Study
Aletsch Arena, a Swiss ski and tourism destination, needed to modernize its aging telecom backbone across a large geographic area. The existing ATM-based network was obsolete, hard to scale, and no longer able to support the growing mix of services such as train control, information systems, IP cameras, weather stations, phones, and snowmaking equipment. Zyxel was brought in to help design a secure, future-proof replacement using managed Gigabit Ethernet switching.
Zyxel implemented a new backbone built around the XGS-4728F L3 managed stackable Gigabit Ethernet switch and the XGS3700 L2+ managed Gigabit Ethernet switch. The new architecture replaced ATM with Ethernet, improved stability and security, and gave each area a self-sufficient, flexible, and expandable network segment with a clear path to 10GbE scaling. Aletsch Arena also benefited from streamlined management through Zyxel’s ZON utility and higher performance across all services, enabling a phased upgrade of the remaining access network.
