Panda Serves Up Disaster Recovery With Zumasys

Panda Restaurant Group, the largest and fastest-growing Asian restaurant company in the U.S. with over 1,300 stores, was struggling with a mixed physical/virtual environment and tape-based backups that took up to 28–36 hours and consumed roughly 30 hours per week of IT time. To get a scalable disaster recovery solution in place quickly, PRG engaged Zumasys to deploy NetApp Syncsort Integrated Backup (NSB), NetApp SnapMirror/SnapVault and NetApp storage between its Rosemead production site and Phoenix DR site.

Zumasys implemented a unified NetApp-based backup and replication solution that moved 95% of systems to NSB, enabled hourly replication of about 60TB to Phoenix, and eliminated most tape dependence. The results: administrative backup time fell from ~30 to ~4 hours per week (≈87% reduction), backup windows were cut in half while systems doubled (from up to 36 hours for 80 systems to ~18 hours for 200), restores went from days to minutes, and PRG saved hundreds of thousands of dollars — with ongoing support and infrastructure projects continuing with Zumasys.
