A Zulip Case Study
The University of California San Diego (UCSD) faced the challenge of transitioning its prestigious mathematics courses online and opening them to a global audience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Kiran Kedlaya needed an effective chat platform to serve as a central communication hub for distributed students, a need not fully met by other apps like Slack or Discord.
Using the Zulip Cloud service, Zulip provided a threaded topic model that organized discussions, alongside critical features like TeX integration for mathematical notation. This solution successfully supported 350 students across six continents, becoming the central platform for courses, a 200-person conference, and a research group, with the professor planning to continue its use for in-person instruction.
