A Zulip Case Study
Technical University of Munich's Department of Informatics needed a communication platform to manage questions and discussions for its massive introductory computer science courses, which had over 1400 students. Due to strict European data privacy regulations, cloud-only solutions were not an option. They required a self-hosted platform that could scale effectively, and their existing tools were insufficient for the volume of communication.
The University implemented a self-hosted instance of Zulip. Zulip’s topic-based threading made managing hundreds of simultaneous conversations possible for both students and staff. The solution was so successful that usage grew to 4,400 users within a year. Zulip also provided a stable, low-maintenance platform, and its open-source community offered immediate support and performance improvements, which were contributed back to the project.
