NTSB Fast Tracks Cloud Transformation with Zero Trust TIC-in-the-Cloud

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which conducts independent accident investigations with a highly mobile workforce, faced growing pain from a legacy VPN-and-TIC architecture that forced all traffic through datacenter backhaul. That design caused latency, connection problems, poor user experience, and security risks that slowed investigators in the field and impeded timely safety work.

NTSB implemented an SD‑WAN and “TIC‑in‑the‑Cloud” solution using Zscaler (including ZPA/ZIA) to deliver Zero Trust, per‑app TLS micro‑tunnels and local breakout over broadband and cellular links. The result: seamless, secure access without placing users on the network, dramatically faster uploads and collaboration, several-hundred-fold increases in application access, improved visibility and control, and an expected reduction in time to safety recommendations (from about a year toward six months) while enabling migration to AWS GovCloud.
