Northern Beaches Council Adopts Zero Trust

Northern Beaches Council, the local government for Dee Why and surrounding areas serving 266,000 residents across 102 locations, faced a fragmented, legacy security estate after an amalgamation of three councils. Rising threats, inconsistent web filtering for staff and public Wi‑Fi users, and reliance on multiple VPN and appliance stacks made security hard to manage and drove the need for a unified zero trust platform.

The council deployed the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange (including ZIA, ZPA, Client Connector and Sandbox) and integrated it with existing tools like CrowdStrike to consolidate appliances, retire VPNs, and extend protection to private apps and IoT (security cameras). In three months the platform processed over 1 billion transactions (~78 TB), prevented more than 3 million policy violations and blocked over 9,700 threats, protecting 2,000+ users daily while simplifying administration and the overall tech stack.
