National Oilwell Varco (NOV) is a Fortune 500 oil-and-gas equipment manufacturer with 25,000 employees across 600+ sites. When COVID-19 forced a sudden global shift to remote work, CIO Alex Philips had to rapidly enable secure, scalable access for a largely mobile workforce—plus many engineers who relied on powerful, non-portable desktops—while replacing legacy appliance-based remote access that supported only about 2,000 concurrent users.
NOV accelerated an existing cloud migration by deploying Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) and Zscaler Private Access (ZPA), pushing a lightweight client to endpoints and enabling secure local internet breakouts and remote access to internal apps. The move scaled quickly—ZPA connections grew 4.5x in 16 days with more than 9,000 simultaneous users—reduced costs, improved security and user experience, and validated NOV’s zero‑trust, work‑from‑anywhere strategy.
