Zoom’s Critical Role Connecting and Supporting People in Residential Aged Care

Opal HealthCare, which operates 80 residential aged care communities across Australia, faced a major challenge during COVID-19: keeping residents connected with family and friends despite long periods without in-person visits. Using Zoom Video Communications, Opal helped residents—many of whom speak different first languages—stay in touch, including memorable moments like a resident meeting her great-granddaughter for the first time over a Zoom call.

Zoom Video Communications implemented its video communications platform across Opal HealthCare by adding 340 tablet devices and training more than 360 staff members to support use in care communities. The results were significant, with residents making daily or weekly calls, connecting across languages, and logging more than 700,000 Zoom minutes; Opal also used Zoom to stream special events like weddings, helping residents feel more included and engaged.
