A Zoom Video Communications Case Study
The MAVEN Project, founded in 2013 by Dr. Laurie Green, mobilizes volunteer physicians—particularly semi‑ or newly retired clinicians—to address gaps in access to care for vulnerable urban and rural populations in the United States. Facing high national healthcare costs, provider shortages, and millions uninsured, MAVEN connects volunteers with clinics and organizations to improve timely access to expertise, using HIPAA‑compliant teleconferencing to overcome geographic and logistical barriers.
Using a MATCH + SOLVE + FACILITATE model, MAVEN pairs physicians with sites, handles barriers like malpractice and technology, and enables direct‑to‑patient visits, curbside consults, and education via Zoom (chosen for ease of use, HIPAA compliance, and strong support). Volunteers commit a minimum of four hours per month; to date they have completed over 380 remote consultations and educational sessions across specialties, maintain five active collaborations, and are expanding regionally in California, Massachusetts, and Florida.
