Zoom Helps Give a Voice to People with Dementia

A Meeting of the Minds, a project sponsored by Mindset Memory Centre and co-led by Laura Bowley and Richard Taylor, works to reduce stigma and isolation for people living with dementia by sharing their voices and connecting them to resources. The group faced barriers including social stigma, limited local support, and poor experiences with other video platforms that had low quality, restrictive capacities, disruptive ads and privacy issues — all of which hindered their ability to reach and empower participants.

Using Zoom’s high-quality, easy-to-use video conferencing with larger participant capacity and a clean interface, A Meeting of the Minds runs monthly webinars, weekly support groups, a virtual Memory Café, and an interactive theatre project that records and shares participants’ stories. The platform has expanded access, reduced isolation, enabled peer-led meetings and new programs (including plans for Laughter Yoga and large conferences), helping people with dementia advocate for themselves and stay connected.
