Theater of War Productions Uses Storytelling to Build Human Connection in a Digital World

Theater of War Productions reimagines live storytelling to surface powerful human experiences—using ancient plays to spark conversations about issues like mental health, violence, and the pandemic. When COVID-19 ended in-person gatherings, the company faced the challenge of preserving the intimacy and civic engagement of its events in a digital format.

They moved to a stripped-down Zoom Webinar model—disabling chat, using raised hands and promoted panelists, and centering live dramatic readings followed by open discussion—which created a surprisingly intimate, global forum. The first virtual performance drew 15,000 attendees from 42 countries; after 40 virtual shows they’ve reached every continent, participated in the Nobel Prize Summit, and earned a $1 million Mellon grant to build a “Digital Amphitheater” for hybrid performances that connect local communities and global audiences.
