Project ECHO & Zoom Celebrating Five Years of Saving Lives

Project ECHO is a medical knowledge-sharing network founded by Dr. Sanjeev Arora to connect expert teams with primary care clinicians in rural and underserved areas. Its original legacy A/V system was costly, complex to maintain—sometimes requiring $5,000 cameras and multiple appliances per site—and prevented rapid, global scaling; provisioning new partners previously took 6–18 months.

Switching to Zoom’s cloud communications platform in 2013 let clinicians join from laptops, phones, and tablets, use off‑the‑shelf hardware, and access recordings for asynchronous learning. The solution cut onboarding time dramatically (accounts can be provisioned in under 18 seconds and hubs become operational in about a month), reduced hardware costs, worked over 3G/4G networks, and enabled Project ECHO to grow to more than 220 hubs across 32 countries and 200+ partner programs within five years.
