A Zoom Video Communications Case Study
Mount Holyoke College’s Mathematics Leadership Program, led by Michael Flynn with program developer Megan Allen, faced a growing problem: education budget cuts left many districts unable to send teachers to on‑campus professional development, shrinking access to high-quality math instruction training. The college needed a way to preserve hands‑on, collaborative learning without the expense and logistics of travel.
They moved to a mix of fully online and blended classes using Zoom—leveraging annotation tools, a dynamic camera/hardware setup, and interactive course design—to recreate the in‑person experience for remote participants. The result was a seamless, highly engaging program that kept costs down, expanded participation nationally and internationally, fostered peer collaboration (including student‑organized “math play dates”), and allowed Mount Holyoke to grow its reach while maintaining instructional quality.
