Case Study: NBA achieves large-scale virtual media distribution and automated content delivery with Zoom Video Communications

A Zoom Video Communications Case Study

Preview of the NBA Case Study

How Zoom Plugs Into a ‘Virtual Content Factory’ & Supports Media Distribution

When the NBA and WNBA restarted their seasons in Orlando and Bradenton during the pandemic, they faced an unprecedented logistical and safety challenge: limit on-site media while still delivering real-time press conferences and media availability to global licensees, broadcasters, and the press. The leagues needed a moderated, self-service solution that could automate delivery into their “virtual content factory” (the NBA Content Network and Official Archive) and reliably distribute assets to partners.

Working with Zoom Pro Events and Zoom Professional Services, the leagues deployed 28 customized Zoom carts (DTEN touchscreens with BirdDog PTZ cameras) and used Zoom Video Webinars to capture, moderate, stream, and auto-deliver content. Over 13 weeks they ran 3,700+ meetings/webinars, streamed 3 million+ press minutes and recorded 2,100+ hours, enabling cloud-to-cloud distribution to partners like Akamai and creating a scalable, repeatable model for safe large-scale media acquisition and delivery.
