How Zoom Has Helped Teach for India Reach the Most Underprivileged Communities

Teach for India, a Mumbai-based nonprofit in the Teach for All network, places recent graduates as Fellows to teach in some of India’s lowest-income communities. When COVID-19 forced schools to close, Fellows faced crowded homes, scarce devices, limited data, and students who were not digital natives — creating a challenge to deliver meaningful, equitable remote learning.

Fellows adopted Zoom Meetings for its simple, low‑footprint interface, reliability on low-end devices, and ability to see all students at once. Zoom enabled academic lessons, social-emotional support, guest-led activities (like a live baking class), and continued staff coordination; the result was more effective online education, richer learning opportunities, and ongoing use of Zoom for classroom and school operations.
