The City of Tacoma's Department of Public Environmental Services faced challenges with inefficient street sweeping operations based on inaccurate "block" estimates and needed a way to verify vehicle locations to mitigate damage claims. To address this, they partnered with Zonar Systems and implemented the Zonar Fleet Management System, including the V3 telematics control unit and Ground Traffic Control software.

By using Zonar's HD-GPS technology, the city gained real-time insights into actual miles swept, which eliminated duplication of effort and saved on miles driven. The solution also provided verifiable time and location data to refute false claims. Furthermore, Zonar's data analysis uncovered significant time and fuel wasted when crews traveled to a central facility for lunch, leading to the new cost-effective solution of using mobile trailers. The results included a lower cost-per-mile for sweeping, improved time management, and a reduced environmental impact.
