The City of Tacoma Department of Public Environmental Services needed a better way to track and manage street sweeping and sewer work. Traditional “block” estimates, paper-based catch basin records, duplicate routes, and unverified complaints led to inaccurate reporting, wasted miles and time, and unnecessary environmental impact.
By deploying Zonar’s Fleet Management System (V3 telematics, HD‑GPS and Ground Traffic Control), Tacoma gained real-time location and usage data, operator accountability, and accurate miles-swept reporting. The system eliminated duplicate efforts, lowered cost-per-mile, digitally marked catch basins, reduced unfounded claims, and revealed operational waste (like time lost to centralized lunches) — prompting mobile lunch/clean-room trailers that save time, fuel and emissions.
