The City of Sacramento manages a 2,300-vehicle heavy-duty fleet across multiple maintenance shops and faced chronic challenges with paper-based pre/post-trip inspections, missed or misplaced driver reports, regulatory compliance and daytime downtime. Fleet leadership needed a way to increase driver accountability, streamline diagnostics and improve maintenance coordination while supporting the city’s climate and DOT compliance goals.

The city integrated Zonar’s EVIR, 2010 and Ground Traffic Control telematics with AssetWorks FleetFocus M5 to automatically send inspection results and onboard fault codes into its maintenance system, trigger service requests, and update vehicle status when repairs are complete. The solution improved workflow coordination, reduced daytime breakdowns, boosted inspection compliance and enabled better fuel tracking — a two-month pilot of 184 vehicles showed nearly 25% average fuel savings (vs a 10% projection) — and about 600 vehicles are now equipped with plans for broader rollout.
