WASGAU AG, a German food‑retail group with over 4,000 employees and more than 90 stores, faced rising administration costs and a resource‑hungry IBM Lotus Notes environment — compounded by an end‑of‑life fax/UMS solution. The company needed a modern, integrated, easy‑to‑manage communication platform to replace Notes and simplify operations.

Working with VNC, WASGAU deployed the open‑source Zimbra Collaboration suite (augmented with Asterisk, HylaFax and a beroNet gateway for fax) and automated central management. In about four months they migrated 700 mailboxes (≈1.5 TB) with a single‑weekend cutover and no downtime, achieving lower operating and licensing costs, improved functionality (including integrated archiving and Zimlets), and easier administration.
