Mairie du Mans Upgrades from Obsolete Microsoft Exchange 2003 to Zimbra for Greater Collaboration and Mobile Access

Mairie du Mans, the municipal government office serving 19 municipalities and over 200,000 residents, supports roughly 3,000 users and nearly 200 business applications with a 40-person IT team. Facing an obsolete Exchange 2003 platform that lacked security updates and caused mobile and compatibility problems, the town needed a web-based, mobile-ready email solution that would remain compatible with Outlook and allow a one-step migration without disrupting users twice.

The city deployed Zimbra Collaboration—using the Zimbra web client and Zimbra Connector for Outlook—and migrated 3,000 accounts in weekly batches of 200, integrated into their VMware environment. The move delivered improved mobile access, larger centralized mailboxes, daily backups to prevent PST data loss, simpler administration and stronger collaboration features; the mairie is now evaluating Zimbra Chat and additional Zimlets to extend functionality.
