A Zimbra Case Study
Mairie d’Aubervilliers, the municipal government office serving a suburb of Paris with over 2,000 employees and more than 850 mailboxes, needed to replace SquirrelMail because it lacked mobile synchronization. Following French recommendations to prefer open source to cut licensing costs, the town sought a professionally supported, open source email platform that could sync to smartphones.
They deployed Zimbra — using the Open Source Edition for most users and Zimbra Network Edition for staff who require smartphone sync and account-level backups. Zimbra was installed in two hours and immediately tested; the hybrid licensing keeps costs well below alternatives like Exchange while delivering mobile sync, partner-led migration and upgrades, and extensibility via the Zimlets community. The mairie now has a robust, low-cost messaging platform and plans to integrate other business apps and Zimbra Chat.
