A Zimbra Case Study
AREU is the Regional Emergency Agency for Lombardy, Italy, coordinating extra-hospital emergency medical services, organ/tissue transport, blood transfusion activities and the regional 112 service across more than 1,000 staff and multiple offices. Faced with a proprietary email system that was too costly to extend (email was available to only 20% of staff) and a public‑administration requirement to favor open source, AREU needed a simple, secure collaboration platform to provide mailboxes to its widely dispersed workforce.
AREU implemented Zimbra Collaboration as an open‑source, extensible mail and collaboration platform, giving every staff member a personal secure mailbox, using Zimbra Briefcase for controlled document sharing, disabling auto‑forwarding for privacy, and integrating HelpDesk and prescription systems via Zimlets. The migration was smooth with a local partner, adoption was rapid and enthusiastic, and the organization gained improved coordination, secure information exchange, and a cost‑effective, scalable solution for 100% of its users.
