Schwarz Group uses Zerto to protect its data centre against natural disasters

The Schwarz Group, a global retail leader (Lidl, Kaufland) headquartered in Neckarsulm, needed to eliminate a critical single point of failure: its metrocluster and thousands of mission‑critical VMs were synchronously mirrored within a 15 km radius of a nuclear power plant, leaving the site vulnerable to a regional disaster. Management therefore required a geodiverse disaster recovery strategy with a DR data centre 200–400 km away to guarantee continuity if the local cluster were affected.

SIT built a new DR site near Salzburg (~300 km) and selected Zerto’s hypervisor‑level, continuous data protection (CDP) replication to stream VMs asynchronously over long distance. The solution added a layer of redundancy beyond the metrocluster HA, delivers 5–10 second RPOs, lets administrators recover individual VMs with a few clicks, simplifies recoverability testing for audits, and offers a robust API for automation and customization.
