A Zencoder Case Study
VHX is a direct-to-fan digital distribution platform that helps creators sell premium video directly from their sites. Rapid growth and a wide variety of input files (large masters, 5.1 surround audio, unusual codecs and aspect ratios) pushed VHX’s homegrown transcoding system past its limits, creating errors and a bottleneck that threatened the company’s ability to scale.
VHX replaced its DIY encoder with Brightcove’s Zencoder cloud service, which handled 5.1 audio and large files and transcodes outputs in parallel. Encoding speeds improved 5–10×, error rates and maintenance dropped (saving roughly $100,000/year, the equivalent of one FTE), reliability moved from “decent” to “extremely reliable,” and the company regained the capacity to scale and focus on sales.
