W Hotel retires two-way radios and supports 68 users with Zello

The W Hotel, a modern luxury hotel in downtown Seattle, sought to replace its outdated and cumbersome two-way radio system, which clashed with its contemporary image and was expensive to maintain. The hotel's engineering team discovered Zello and its push-to-talk walkie-talkie app as a modern communication solution that could run on Wi-Fi or cellular data networks.

Zello implemented a solution using approximately 50 Apple iPod Touches and a PC-based radio gateway to connect with existing two-way radios during the transition. The vendor provided technical support and a web-based management console for easy user updates. The result was a highly reliable system that led to the eventual retirement of all two-way radios. The network now supports 68 users, and the hotel saved money by repurposing the gateway subscription for new users instead.
