Truman Medical Centers University Health charts big improvements in clinician communication and satisfaction with single mobility investment

Truman Medical Centers/University Health (TMC/UH), an academic health system in Kansas City serving more than 100,000 patients with nearly 550 inpatient beds, faced a fragmented “nursing toolbelt” of phones, pagers, scanners, laptops and carts that slowed workflows, hindered communication and risked patient safety. The organization needed to consolidate devices to streamline clinician workflows, improve care-team communications and boost satisfaction.

TMC/UH implemented Zebra TC51‑HC mobile computers with Cerner CareAware Connect (and Patient Observer) to enable bedside vitals charting, medication and specimen scanning, and secure two‑way messaging. Widespread adoption produced measurable gains: care‑team satisfaction rose 35%, perceived response times improved 50%, pages to physicians fell 50%, and the hospital saw reductions in patient falls and medical errors along with broader operational efficiencies.
