Siemens Healthineers, a global leader in diagnostic and therapeutic medical technology, developed the RAPIDPoint® 500e blood gas analyser to deliver fast, accurate and secure results for ICU patients. The Covid‑19 pandemic created a sudden surge in demand and exposed supply‑chain constraints, while clinicians needed a simple, reliable system that protected patient data and supported rapid ventilator and treatment decisions.

Working with Zebra Technologies, Siemens integrated 1D/2D scanning (integrated or handheld), Zebra OEM components and custom firmware to enable barcode-driven workflows that capture up to 10 data fields in under a second, deliver results in 60 seconds, and run on a secure Windows 10 platform. Zebra’s supply‑chain support and component customisation (including a proximity‑activated scanner laser and disinfectant‑ready housings) helped boost production five-fold in under a month, accelerating deployment to hospitals and improving speed and accuracy of patient care.
