Italian Supermarket Deploys A Zebra And RetAPPs Flexible, High-performance Self-scanning Solution

Iperal, a Lombardy-based Italian supermarket group with dozens of hypermarkets and supermarkets, wanted to replace a limited Windows-based trial with a more user-friendly, flexible Android self‑scanning system and a long-term digital retail partner. The retailer teamed with RetAPPs to deliver a 360° solution that would boost usability and drive wider customer adoption of self‑scanning.

RetAPPs rolled out a Personal Shopping System using Zebra PS20 handhelds, CC6000 Customer Concierges and a bespoke Iperal-branded SmartBip app; customers register, unlock a PS20 with their store card, scan items directly into bags, access shopping lists, loyalty, coupons and pay via dedicated checkouts, while staff use the devices for in-store order picking. The solution has seen growing uptake—especially among younger shoppers—reduced interaction during shopping, additional PS20 deployments at current hypermarkets and plans to expand the PSS and introduce more SmartBip features to drive sales and long‑term ROI.
