The Economist Overcomes Scalability and Performance Challenges

The Economist, a weekly international news and business publication with more than 1.5 million subscribers, was outgrowing its third‑party hosting service: capacity shortfalls and poor performance were impacting its image library, customer database and content management system. To solve these scalability and performance challenges, The Economist selected Zadara Storage to provide cloud‑based, enterprise‑grade NFS storage integrated with their AWS compute environment.

Zadara Storage deployed virtual private storage arrays, high‑performance NFS file services, snapshots for rapid recovery and remote mirroring (replicating AWS US East to US West) to deliver performance, capacity elasticity and disaster recovery. The implementation eliminated capacity constraints and performance bottlenecks, improved overall performance and enabled fast recovery and business continuity — as The Economist’s VP Brendan McPartlan reported, “we never run out of capacity.”
