Case Study: University of Oslo achieves scalable, automated monitoring of 3,000+ servers with Zabbix

A Zabbix Case Study

Preview of the University of Oslo Case Study

University of Oslo - Customer Case Study

The University of Oslo, Norway’s largest educational institution with ~30,000 students and a highly heterogeneous IT estate (≈3,000 servers, thousands of network devices and services), faced a monitoring challenge: a mix of point tools that wouldn’t scale, hard-to-maintain configurations across hundreds of administrators, and a need for centralized alerting, strong access control and high automation.

UiO adopted Zabbix as a central monitoring hub, integrating it with CFEngine, their Nivlheim inventory, Grafana and ELK via APIs and proxies to automate host provisioning, role-based access and notifications. The deployment now monitors ~3,000 servers with ~350,000 items and ~200,000 triggers (≈130 million daily measurements), supports ~350 users, and delivers scalable, automated monitoring, consolidated alerts and improved observability across the university.
