Munich Transport Corporation - Customer Case Study

Munich Transport Corporation (MVG), part of Stadtwerke München, operates the city’s trams, subways and related services and needed a more reliable way to detect and diagnose faults across thousands of moving devices. The existing monitoring system reached its limits as device numbers, complexity and the need for finer diagnostics grew—especially for components in vehicles that intermittently enter dead zones—so MVG required a flexible, extensible solution with strong visualization and direct device access.

MVG implemented Zabbix (with support from IntelliTrend), leveraging its multi-protocol support, scripting extensibility, items/triggers logic and powerful API to build custom availability checks and UI-driven controls. Today Zabbix monitors 3,796 devices with 105,816 items and 23,820 triggers, auto-generates maps per vehicle and lets operators access devices from the UI. The result: problems that were previously undetectable are now identified and fixed much faster, workflows are simplified, and overall monitoring scalability and visibility have greatly improved.
