ICT Solutions scales monitoring for 160 clients with Zabbix

ICT Solutions, a managed service provider based in Liverpool, faced challenges in efficiently monitoring the diverse on-premise equipment within their clients' hybrid IT environments. Using Zabbix, they had historically deployed Raspberry Pi devices as proxies, but managing hundreds of these proxies became time-consuming. Furthermore, performance was declining as monitoring needs grew, and the reliance on SD cards for the Zabbix proxy database posed a reliability risk.

The solution involved streamlining proxy deployment with Ansible and Semaphore for automation and upgrading to Raspberry Pi 5 devices. Critically, Zabbix 7.0's "ProxyBufferMode=hybrid" feature allowed the proxies to use RAM instead of the SD cards for the database, drastically improving reliability. This Zabbix-based implementation resulted in a highly scalable and manageable monitoring setup, providing valuable insights for approximately 160 clients and thousands of devices, with enhanced performance, flexibility, and security.
