Case Study: Plume achieves 27+ billion ops/day and sub-40ms latency with YugabyteDB

A YugabyteDB Case Study

Preview of the Plume Case Study

Plume powers millions of smart homes that generate over 27 billion operations per day handled by YugabyteDB

Plume, a provider of cloud-based smart home and ISP services used by major carriers like Comcast and Sky UK, faced scaling limits and operational complexity with MongoDB and found Apache Cassandra too costly and slow for its event-heavy workload. To meet projected volumes (75+ billion ops/day and 85+ TB of data) and improve latency and manageability, Plume turned to YugabyteDB, deploying the database on AWS to replace its previous data infrastructure.

YugabyteDB was implemented as fully managed, 60-node clusters in a multi-AZ, multi-region AWS setup using Plume and partner VPCs. The YugabyteDB deployment enabled Plume to process over 27 billion operations per day (with headroom for 75 billion), sustain a 35 TB dataset, deliver ~312K transactions/sec and read/write latencies under 30–40 ms, and gain rolling upgrades, GDPR readiness, faster customer onboarding, and significantly reduced database management overhead.
