Helpshift Eliminates Barriers to Growth after Migrating from NoSQL to Distributed SQL

Helpshift, a San Francisco–based leader in mobile in‑app customer service, was outgrowing its legacy MongoDB NoSQL stack as monthly active users approached the billion mark. Facing manual sharding, scalability limits, inconsistent conversation data, and a lack of ACID guarantees, Helpshift chose to migrate to YugabyteDB, the distributed SQL database from Yugabyte, to modernize their data layer and address these core challenges.

Helpshift executed a phased migration to YugabyteDB—normalizing schemas, leveraging Postgres compatibility and JSONB for semi‑structured data, and tuning secondary indexes to avoid hotspots. YugabyteDB delivered ACID transactions, geo‑distribution, built‑in availability and easy horizontal scaling, enabling low latency at scale; Helpshift now supports ~800M monthly active consumers and says the platform is ready for a 200x scale increase without failures.
