Yubico partnered with U.S. Department of Defense contractors after the 2011–2012 RSA SecurID breach, when contractors required stronger assurance that OTP token secrets would never be stored by manufacturers or third parties. They needed tokens that could be programmed on-site, server software that was fully transparent with no hidden weaknesses, and a cost‑effective way to protect cryptographic secrets across multiple servers.

Yubico delivered YubiKeys and YubiHSM along with open‑source server software (Yubico OTP, remote access and secret‑protection solutions) and best‑practice processes that met those strict requirements. The solution was the only one to satisfy the contractors’ security criteria, while delivering significant hardware, software and support cost savings and reducing support headcount (from five people to one).
