PNNL deploys Yubico YubiKey authentication for 4,500 staff in 6 months

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) needed to modernize its authentication process to improve its overall security posture. While the lab historically used smart cards for a limited number of privileged users, it sought a solution from Yubico to deploy strong authentication for all staff that was both highly secure and intuitive for daily use.

PNNL implemented YubiKey smart cards for its entire organization, issuing two keys to each employee for primary and backup use. Yubico's solution enabled the lab to successfully deploy over 9,000 keys to more than 4,500 staff within six months. The rollout significantly enhanced the user experience by simplifying authentication for research staff and streamlining the login process.
