A Yubico Case Study
Google, a global Fortune 50 technology company, faced sophisticated cyber attacks in 2009 that could circumvent traditional security controls. The challenge was a lack of viable two-factor authentication options to prevent these account takeovers and protect confidential information. Google began working with vendor Yubico to find a solution.
Yubico collaborated with Google to co-create a strong, phishing-resistant authentication protocol, which later became the open FIDO U2F standard. The solution implemented was the YubiKey. The results were significant: a near-zero authentication failure rate, a 92% reduction in support incidents, and employee logins that were nearly 50% faster than SMS and four times faster than Google Authenticator. Most importantly, Google has experienced no confirmed account takeovers since deploying the YubiKey at scale for its entire workforce.
