Freedom of the Press Foundation - Customer Case Study

The Freedom of the Press Foundation is a nonprofit that funds and defends adversarial journalism worldwide and needed a highly secure, reliable, and easy-to-deploy two-factor authentication solution to protect interoffice communications and the confidentiality of sources. Their existing smart cards were fragile, bulky, and costly to replace, so the organization sought a durable, affordable hardware option that staff and journalists could use reliably.

FPF replaced smart cards with YubiKey 4 devices supporting U2F and PGP, including use as the second factor for SecureDrop. With Yubico’s support the rollout was quick and simple, staff and trainees — including less technical users — adopted the keys enthusiastically, backups were affordable, and the organization strengthened access security and source protection.
