City of Sacramento secures remote workers in early 2020 with Yubico

The City of Sacramento, the oldest incorporated city in California, faced a challenge securing its remote workforce. With many employees lacking government-issued mobile devices, the city could not mandate the use of personal phones for mobile-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) required for VPN and application access. This issue became critical during the shift to telework in early 2020, prompting the search for an alternate MFA solution from vendor Yubico.

The city implemented YubiKeys for MFA, integrating them with their existing PortalGuard single sign-on system. This Yubico solution provided a simple and cost-effective means to secure remote workers, minimizing reliance on mobile-based authentication. The results included strong phishing defense for remote employees and an enhanced user experience.
