emsTradepoint, a company facilitating energy and carbon trading, needed to bring transparency to the opaque natural gas and carbon markets in New Zealand. The previous reliance on private, bilateral deals created information asymmetry, stifled competition, and created high barriers to entry for new participants. To solve this, they engaged the vendor YouDo to build a proprietary exchange platform.
YouDo successfully built and expanded emsTradepoint's trading system, applying a central counterparty model to create an anonymous and transparent marketplace for both natural gas and carbon products. The solution was delivered on time and on budget, concluding a six-month project to launch carbon trading. The platform eliminated information asymmetry, broke down barriers to entry, and brought complete visibility to the market, a feat for which the initial gas platform won an Innovation award.
