Sweetwater Union High School District migrates 36,000-student Oracle system to SQL Server with Xtivia

The customer, Sweetwater Union High School District, faced significant challenges in migrating its large, outdated Oracle database system to SQL Server 2022. The district lacked in-house Oracle migration expertise and was under a tight deadline due to an impending consultant departure, all while dealing with an unknown migration scope and a substantial volume of historical data. Vendor Xtivia was engaged to perform the migration using the SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Oracle.

Xtivia executed the migration by first upgrading the Oracle source for SSMA compatibility, then preparing and optimizing the target SQL Server environment. Using SSMA, they converted and migrated a targeted subset of schemas, tables, and procedures, providing daily status updates and detailed documentation to ensure transparency. The project was a success, resulting in the complete migration of the legacy system to a modern SQL Server platform. This allowed the customer to decommission the old Oracle system, minimizing operational overlap and costs while establishing a foundation for improved performance and scalability.
