A Xtivia Case Study
AIRLINE CUSTOMER was migrating stand-alone Microsoft SQL Server databases to virtual machines and consolidated a second application onto a clustered VM, after which users experienced timeouts and dropped connections. The customer engaged XTIVIA—using its Virtual-DBA remote database administration services—to quickly diagnose SQL Server performance problems.
XTIVIA’s investigation showed the clustered server had only 2 GB RAM (available memory fell to about 20 MB), excessive paging, a ~70% buffer cache hit ratio, heavy index fragmentation, and a single tempdb file. XTIVIA recommended adding memory, creating six new indexes, implementing index maintenance, adding three tempdb files, and upgrading to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1; the customer implemented all but the upgrade, and XTIVIA’s changes eliminated the dropped connections and timeouts, restoring stable performance.
