YMCA NSW, the New South Wales branch of the YMCA federation, faced slow, low-quality, phone-based reference checks that created “phone tag,” long delays and weak evidencing at a time when rigorous child‑safety and compliance checks are critical. To solve this the organisation turned to Xref’s online reference checking platform to improve turnaround, quality and auditability of referee responses.
Xref implemented automated online reference checks with written referee forms, real-time progress updates and fraud-detection safeguards. As a result, YMCA NSW cut average reference turnaround from about a week to 30 hours, saw richer feedback (an average of 307 words per reference in 2017) and 45% of references completed outside business hours, freeing recruiters to be more consultative and strengthening compliance — outcomes YMCA NSW attributes directly to Xref.
