Upgrade Capital set out to better identify hire-ready talent by running realistic, longer-term trading competitions for students—something conventional virtual platforms couldn’t support due to delayed data and limited trade execution. Self-funded and on a tight timeline, they needed a cost-effective, real-time trading system that could track and verify individual performance across competitions.

They integrated Xignite’s plug-and-play market data APIs (real-time last sale, global security master and historical quotes) to rapidly build a browser-based trading platform with live execution, portfolio tools and performance analytics. The platform enabled the largest cross-university competition to date, delivered verifiable quantitative evaluations for employers, and freed Upgrade Capital to expand via partnerships like the Ben Graham Fellowship and a collaboration with Quantopian.
